AV Light Foundation sponsors a yearly Youth Conference in the community for youth of “promise and potential” that others consider to be “at-risk”. The conference is held in the spring at Big Rock Creek Camp.
The theme of the conference is to provide the youth of the Antelope Valley with the tools to become productive members of society. Principals and Counselors of middle schools in the Antelope Valley select youth 12-14 years old, from their respective schools, to attend the conference. Approximately one-third of the youth are peer leaders, and the other two-thirds are students labeled “at-risk” due to family problems, poor school attendance, and behavior problems.
For the past seven years, we have provided an opportunity for some of the youth to return as peer counselors at the conference. This gives these students as opportunity to be positive role models for the students attending, as well as a chance to give back to the community that believed in them to make the changes that were necessary in their lives.
